In the current political environment, the fundamental EU principles we took previously for granted such as the rule of law, sexual freedom, gender equality and free trade are being put into question. The backlash against a rule-based international system and free societies is not just a phenomenon in the West but throughout the world. Has market centrism and increasing inequality left too many people behind? When did we cease to strive towards ever fairer societies and economies that value equality, freedom and the rule of law? In short: when did we lose the Republic as an expression of the common good?
