The study National Parliaments and European Democracy focussed on members of national parliaments. They were asked about their perception of democracy, their understanding of their roles within the European multi-level system and possible reforms to improve cooperation between the national and European political levels. Our goal was to make national MPs aware of the European dimension of their work and to promote a different discourse on Europe – away from the alternative „more/less Europe“ towards the question of a different Europe.

Amongst other aspects, this project highlighted the fears and aspirations of “smaller” and peripheral member states and advocated a shift away from national sovereignty towards political equality for all citizens (“one person, one vote”) as a prerequisite for the formation of a true European parliamentary system.
