On 10 November 2018 at 4 p.m., 100 years after the end of WWI and the proclamation of the Republic in Germany, artists and citizens together with the European Democracy Lab proclaimed from (theatre) balconies and public places all over Europe the European Republic. A manifesto by Ulrike Guérot, Robert Menasse and Milo Rau was read and put up for discussion. The participatory art intervention took place in 25 countries and more than 30 different languages. More than 150 cultural institutions and citizen groups took part in the action, including NTGent, the Bitef Theatre Festival Belgrade, the Burgtheater Vienna and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Numerous public figures supported the project, including Elfriede Jelinek, Étienne Balibar, Carolin Emcke, Srećko Horvat and Dubravka Ugrešić. The pro- ject was possible thanks to numerous private donations as part of a crowdfunding campaign and the support of the Open Society Founda- tion and the Between Bridges Foundation.

The European Balcony Project has thus set a counterpoint to the resurgent of nationalism in many places. In order to promote the vision of a democratic Europe, we have now published the project’s art catalogue, with contributions from renowned artists, activists and committed citizens. This multilingual catalogue reflects the multitude of citizens and initiatives interested in a stable and functioning Europe. It combines different ideas about the future of Europe, such as a European passport or a European constitution. The catalogue summarises the activities that took place throughout Europe between 9.11. and 11.11.2018. The Manifesto for the Proclamation of the European Republic, which has been translated into over 30 languages, as well as texts from citizens and institutions – from doctoral candidates to EU Commissioners – are published in this catalogue. We are very pleased that Theater der Zeit has supported the publication.
